Cultural Awareness and Safety

Larissa was born in Dubbo NSW, The Centre of NSW. She is a Proud Aboriginal Australian Woman, Descendent from Wiradjuri (Central West NSW) and Bundjalung Tribes (Cabbage Tree Island, 20mins from Lismore, Far North Coast NSW).
Naomi Huxley is a proud Saltwater woman, her mob are Yanyuwa from Borroloola, and Vanderlin Island in the NT. She is from a culturally diverse background, born on the South Coast of South Australia, growing up by the Coorong (Goolwa), in Adelaide, and Darwin. Naomi has a media broadcasting background, teaching, consulting, mentoring background. Her passion lies in education, mentoring, building aspirations, sharing knowledge about her Aboriginal Culture in an inclusive way.

Sector Support and Development, NSW have developed a comprehensive program around Cultural Awareness and Safety with the aim of up-skilling Aged care support services on their understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture so they can become agents of social change. The program is designed to help aged care workers understand the cultural barriers clients can face and be more culturally sensitive with clients, families and agencies they work with in this space. Participants will learn strategies for communication and begin their learning journey for diversity.
The first in the series and held over 2 x 2 hour sessions, this interactive and informative workshop looks at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, white contact history and the White Australia policies.
- Develop an awareness, and understanding, of the centrality of the Dreaming, and of the oldest surviving culture on this planet.
- Reflect on different ways Aboriginal culture is taught, learned, and maintained through traditional ways of knowing and being.
- Identify events and policies that impacted on the lives of Aboriginal people since 1788
The follow-on session will be held on Thursday 27 August from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon AEST
